On the occasion of 200 years of the Wrocław University Botanic Garden


Information for Composers We would like to invite you to take part in the MUSIC IN THE GARDEN Composers' Competition organized as a celebration of 200 years of The Botanic Garden at the Wrocław University.

The event is open to composers of all types of music: classical, pop, jazz, etc. Compositions entered in the competition should be addressed to a wide audience and intended to be performed in gardens and parks. The theme of this year's edition is TIMES OF DAY IN THE GARDEN.

The music should illustrate such notions as: Daybreak, Morning dew, In the midday sun, Sunset over the garden, Garden in a dream, etc.

Results of the 5th International Music in the Garden Composers’ Competition Wrocław - Kraków 2010/2011

On 22 December 2010 at headquarters of the organizer, The Art Garden Association, 6 Dobrego Pasterza Street in Kraków, the jury met as follows:
  • Alkis Baltas (Greece) - chairman
  • Jan Baryła (Poland)
  • Henryk Jan Botor (Poland)
  • Wojciech Widłak (Poland)
  • Iwona Glinka (Greece) - secretary of the jury
There were 27 entries from composers from the following countries: Poland, Canada, the USA, Italia, Latvia, the Czech Republic (the full list of works submitted is attached). The competition was open to compositions for string orchestra and soprano, with optional additional flute, oboe, bassoon and/or vibraphone. The entrants’ identities remained anonymous. Compositions were presented to the jury under pseudonyms and the prizes were awarded as follows:
  • 1st prize - equivalent of €3,000 - for The Lovers’ Garden, John Sarkissian (Canada), pseudonym "duck, swan".
  • 2nd prize - equivalent of €1,200 - for Farewell Dream Garden, Dosia McKay (USA), pseudonym "gavia".
  • 3rd prize - equivalent of €800 - for Day Seasons, Krzysztof Aleksander Janczak (Polska), pseudonym "Kalle Blomkvist".
The jury also awarded four distinctions, each of a value equivalent to €500.
  • for Ogród nie jedno ma oblicze, Artur Słotwiński (Poland), pseudonym "białe bzy".
  • for Popołudniowe epizody, Tomasz Cywiński (Poland), pseudonym "jaktotak".
  • for Awakening, Adam Kosewski (Poland), pseudonym "psalmista".
  • for Deszczowy poranek w ogrodzie, composer Piotr Kubiak, pseudonym "orient 001".
